Match Report: Masters Vs Collingwood

Sunday 21st April 2013, Kevin Bartlett Reserve, Richmond
Collingwood 2 - Central Park 3

FIRST HALF MASTERCLASS HOLDS OFF FAST FINISHING COLLINGWOOD

Glorious sunshine and a top quality pitch greeted the team. No nets or corner flags but with only three players the Boys in black and white were keen to stretch out kick off as much as possible. The ref eventually shortened the halves to 40 minutes - more of that later.

Following retirements, injuries and a few sabbaticals we'd lost 8 from last years squad. On the flip side we welcomed Wayne, Ricky, Steve and Simon for their first games and Big Dave returning from Singapore.

The first half was a joy to behold. Calm passing, working the flanks, Lars and Simon providing targets supported wide by Ricky and Jon.

Somehow Collingwood survived the early skirmishes but were resorting to a long ball game which was easily mopped up by Wayne and Neil at the back.

Constant pressure started to tell with Steve and John marshalling the middle of the park ably supported off the bench by Ian and Ant. In the end a great corner to the far post created the opener for Simon who tucked it away off his knee/shin/spotty socks. They all count and we were off and running.

Our second was a bit of magic from the corner flag as Lars beat one, tiptoed along the goal line to beat another then drove the ball across the goal for Joey to tuck it away.

Collingwood improved giving me more trouble than Niall but we held out well with Kostas making a fine save from their only real shot.

With half time looming it looked like 2-0 until a brain fade at the back gifted us the ball in the corner. A perfect cross picked out Joey who headed home his second. 3-0 half time.

Looking to push on we started well but with an unusually large number of subs found it hard to get going. Was all fairly tame until a free kick in the box saw Collingwood pull a rather fortunate one back.

Shortly after with the game in the bag yours truly gave the ball away, one on one with Kostas, goal bound shot which I turned over the bar - red card, penalty.

However, the king of the penalties Kostas psyched out Collingwood skipper Olly who hit the outside of the post.

15 minutes to go and ten men. End to end stuff and we could have easily sown it up. Against the run Collingwood made it 3-2

Time up, or so we thought, until the ref decided to play a 49 minute half. Despite that no more goals and six points from two games.

Much to like in today's game and with a few more games under our belt we should be humming along nicely.

Great result and back to the Fortress next Sunday for new boys Bulleen - 3pm kick off.
